Our calculation approach
Identify the grading system
We use the grading scale selected or defined by the calculator.
Convert grades to points
Letter grades are mapped to quality points according to the selected scale.
Apply course weighting
Course quality points are multiplied by the applicable credit hours or weighting rules.
Calculate and round
The weighted results are summed and divided according to the selected method, then rounded only at the end where applicable.
How GPA is calculated
Every GPA on this site is a credit-weighted average. Each course's letter grade becomes a number of quality points, that figure is multiplied by the course's credit hours, all the products are summed, and the total is divided by the total credit hours counted.
Worked example:

The calculation visually uses the exact values entered into the calculator.
Rounding policy
Results are rounded to three decimal places at the very end, never during intermediate calculations.
This avoids rounding drift when many courses are included.
Letter Grade → Quality Points
These are the two tables available in GradeCalculatorHQ. The difference is the treatment of an A+. Most United States schools cap an A+ at 4.0, while some grading systems award 4.3.

Percentage inputs are not universal
GradeCalculatorHQ does not assume a universal percentage-to-GPA conversion.
When a calculator supports percentage input, it uses the selected grading scale's defined ranges rather than assuming that one percentage cutoff applies to every school.

How weighted GPA works
A weighted GPA is produced by adding bonus quality points to harder courses before the credit-weighted average is taken. It is not produced by simply scaling the final unweighted GPA upward.

These are selectable policies. Institutional policies can differ.
Insight: The "Straight A" Example
A student with straight A's in only regular classes has a weighted GPA of exactly 4.0 at a school that uses a 5.0 scale.
The additional weighting applies to eligible advanced courses. It does not automatically inflate ordinary-course A grades above their base value.
Grades that carry no quality points
Certain grades are excluded from both the numerator and denominator rather than being treated as 0.0.

Why credit hours matter
Courses with more credit hours contribute more to a credit-weighted GPA. A 4-credit course has more influence on a cumulative GPA than a 1-credit course with the same grade.
How course impact is calculated
The figure shown beside each course is the difference between your GPA with that course included and your GPA with it removed.
- Positive = course raises GPA
- Negative = course lowers GPA
- Zero = no net effect
The metric is suppressed when there is only one graded course.
What depends on your school
Some grading rules are institutional policies, not mathematical constants.
