How to Use the Cumulative GPA Calculator

Enter each past semester's GPA and the total credit hours for that term. GradeCalculatorHQ calculates the cumulative result by weighting each entered term GPA by the credit hours associated with that term.

Why You Can't Just Average Your GPAs

One of the most common mistakes students make is simply adding their semester GPAs together and dividing by the number of semesters. This is mathematically incorrect unless every semester has the exact same number of credits.

The wrong way (Plain Average)

3.0 + 4.0 = 7.0 ÷ 2 semesters = 3.50

The right way (Credit-Weighted)

45 + 24 = 69 ÷ 21 credits = 3.286

A 6-credit summer term shouldn't have the same influence on your cumulative GPA as an 18-credit fall term. That is why this calculator forces you to enter the credit hours.

How Cumulative GPA Is Calculated

Cumulative GPA = Σ(Term GPA × Term Credits) ÷ Σ(Total Credits)

Use the GPA and credit values reported by your school rather than assuming that every institution calculates cumulative GPA the same way.

How to Get the Right Numbers From Your Transcript

Find the "Term GPA"

Make sure you are looking at the GPA for that specific semester, not the running cumulative GPA.

Find the correct credits

Use the credit total your institution uses in its GPA calculation, often labeled "GPA Credits", "Attempted Credits", or a similar term. Do not assume that "Earned Credits" is always the correct denominator, as failed courses (0.0 GPA) usually count toward the GPA denominator even though they earn no credits.

Check Transfer Credits

If you transferred from another school, check your current institution's policy to determine whether transfer grades are included in its cumulative GPA or whether only the credits transfer. Enter the term GPAs and credits that your institution actually uses in its GPA calculation.

How do you calculate cumulative GPA?

To calculate a cumulative GPA, you don't just average your past GPAs. You must multiply each semester's GPA by its credit hours to get 'quality points'. Then sum all quality points and divide by the total number of credit hours.

Does a bad freshman year ruin my cumulative GPA?

A poor freshman-year GPA does not determine your final cumulative GPA by itself. Its effect depends on the number of credits in that year and the grades and credits you earn later.

Why is averaging my semester GPAs wrong?

A plain average treats a 6-credit summer term the same as an 18-credit fall term. Credit-weighting is what makes the result mathematically accurate, and the gap between the two methods is often a tenth of a point or more.
